Product Description

Everyone needs a nata. They're a woody wonder, providing a sense of mastery over nature, ideal for snedding (our new word), de-limbing, splitting, shaving (kindling, not beards), lopping and chopping.

The nata is fundamentally a professional edge tool for Japanese foresters, one that serves as a versatile outdoor tool. Gardeners who deal with a lot of wood, for instance, or happy campers who prefer fallen wood for a fire.

A word on craft and tradition. You're in the market for a nata - that's clear - and Kikuchi san's nata is the real deal. Fully handcrafted - the perfectly formed handle, the robust stainless ferrule, the beautiful business end, all Kikuchi san's work - this is not the machine-made hardware store shadow or a tool assembled from purchased parts. There is a sense of shokunin no waza - the artisan's spirit - to be experienced with every swing. Just take it easy to start with, that spirit is seriously sharp.

The Ancient Art of Forging Japanese Knives 02:46

At 30-years-old, Yu Kikuchi was tired of his job. Working in an assembly line that made turbines, he was aching to find a new lease on life. So when he heard about 80-year-old master blacksmith Kosaku Matsumura who made ‘’nata,” or Japanese hatchets, he knew he had found his calling. He moved to the countryside and asked Matsumura to take him on as an apprentice. While Kikuchi has less than thee years of experience under his belt compared to Matsumura's 50, the young man still hopes to one day be at the level of his master. When the time comes, he hopes to take on an apprentice of his own, passing on the blacksmith’s torch.
