Golden Week Sale 2018

Well here we are again, Golden Week in Japan. A succession of secular holidays and a free day or two in between, with people all over the country eager to make the most of some much-needed time off. It's the Japanese work holiday people are willing to take, because everyone else does.

It's crowded everywhere you might think to go, and it takes longer to get there. The bullet trains groan under the weight of 110% bookings, the highways are clogged. Hotels are full, campsites are full and mountain trails are full, of yama-gaaru (mountain girls) in spotless hiking outfits. In our neck of the woods around a million visitors will descend upon Hiroshima for the three days of our annual Flower Festival. Gulp.

It's a colourful time of year though and in that sense it's a lovely time to be Japanese. This shin-ryoku-no-kisetsu, the season of new leaves, bedecks the mountainsides with greens of every hue, the sky is a high blue and occasionally we see iwashi-no-kumo (sardine clouds!) through the day. Families fly vibrantly coloured koi-nobori carp on big flagpoles to honour their boys. So all very nice, but one of the busiest, crowdiest times of the year.
